Our emergency surgical approach in a case with migration of the atrial septal defect occluder device into left atrium and displacement on mitral valve

چکیده
Results After median sternotomy and vertical incision of the pericardium, standard aortic and bicaval venous cannulation was carried out. Following the cross-clamping of the aorta antegrade blood cardioplegia was introduced. Right atriotomy was done. ASD occluder device was detected within the left atrium settled on the mitral valve which was observed through 50 x 25 mm fossa ovalis type secundum ASD. After transseptal removal of the device from the left atrium, the defect was repaired using a polytetrafluoroethylene cardiac patch. His intensive care unit stay was 2 days and he was discharged from the hospital on 7th postoperative day. His 1st, 3rd and 6th follow-up visits were free of events and repeated echocardiographic examinations revealed no residual shunting. Conclusions One must keep in mind that transcatheter closure has such complications as migration of the device and development of residual shunting. In case of occurrence of such complications, the problem may be solved by standard open cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Urgent Surgical Intervention for Embolized Cardiac Occluder Devices: A Case Series
Introduction: In this study, we sought to illustrate our experience in urgent surgical management for embolized cardiac septal occlude devices resulting from trans-catheter closure of atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect. Mathrials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed four patients aged 2–10 years who underwent urgent surgery due to cardiac septal occluder embolization between...
متن کاملStaged approach for the management of atrial septal defect in the presence of a small left ventricle and suprasystemic pulmonary pressure
A 29-year-old woman presented with a symptomatic large atrial septal defect, a small left ventricle with a modest left atrium, mild to moderate nonrheumatic mitral valve incompetence, an apex-forming very large right ventricle and suprasystemic pulmonary artery pressure. Following one year of preprocedural drug treatment to lower pulmonary hypertension, she underwent percutaneous closure of the...
متن کاملTough, but not impossible – Retrieval of large atrial septal occluder devices embolized to left atrium
Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital heart defect that is being increasingly treated using percutaneous interventions. However, these techniques are not devoid of complications. One such complication is device embolization. Removal of such closure device poses tremendous risk and consequent complications both by percutaneous retrieval and surgical removal. Herein, we present two cases of ...
متن کاملVery Late Dislocation of an AMPLATZER Septal Occluder Device Suspected Thanks to a Recent Onset of Right-Axis Deviation.
D ata on late complications after percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects (ASDs) are still sparse. This is the first report of a very late dislocation of an AMPLATZER septal occluder (ASO) device (St. Jude Medical, St. Paul, Minnesota) 14 years after placement. A 74-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted to our department for a syncopal event preceded by palpitations. Her medical history i...
متن کاملRight atrial ball thrombus associated with atrial septal occluder device: A late complication of transcatheter atrial septal defect closure
In a large autopsy study, intracardiac ball thrombi are usually seen in the left atrium and rarely seen in the right atrium. They may be one or more in number. Right atrial ball thrombus may appear as a complication of central venous catheterization or be coexistent with tricuspid stenosis. A 42-year-old woman who began routine hemodialysis 5 years ago due to chronic kidney disease was admitted...
